Dentistry for children means that each and every one of us - dental team and parent - understands their role in helping children to become healthier.

Dentistry for children means that each and every one of us - dental team and parent - understands their role in helping children to become healthier.

Existing health problems may affect the way in which a child needs to be treated if anaesthetics are required. Knowing about previous medical treatments and apprehensions in new situations will greatly aid in our optimal approach to your child. The more the dentist knows about a child the better equipped he/she is to waylay anxieties.

Clarification of mutual expectations are important in order that all can understand the child's strengths and weaknesses. It is important for you, the parent, to express your own expectations; therefore, a complete and expansive history and assessment are necessary.

Dentistry for Children means putting the Whole Child First.

We consult the child and the parent and determine the best interest of the child. Consultation, assessment or evaluation are always completed to help us understand the problem that requires treatment. We can assess the child's confidence level, esteem level and trust level. When we put the best interest of the child first, we are able to plan more appropriately. By being truthful to children we are able to establish rapport and trust that will allow us to complete treatment better.

Dentistry for Children means doing what is in the Child's best interest.

We are committed to a thorough clinical examination of the child. We honour that commitment by choosing the proper method of treatment by examining comprehensively with the use of X-Rays. In order to do only what is necessary and to be sure that no infections (abscesses) are present, a thorough clinical and x-ray examination should be completed where appropriate. Teeth can be properly restored when we understand the proximity of the pulp (nerve) tissue and the presence, shape and quality of the developing adult teeth underneath. The choice of filling material can only be appropriately chosen when radiographs are taken. This may avoid inappropriate treatment now or prevent re-treatment later.

Dentistry for Children should be a non traumatic experience with short, easy and positive appointments for restorative care.

In a show and tell way, when children's apprehensions and anxieties are alleviated, proper and ideal dentistry can be completed. We routinely use rubber dam isolation to make appointments easier and the treatment more efficient and effective.

We know children can sit for short periods and hence short appointments are ideal. Children can understand our care when we relieve their discomfort and produce favourable aesthetic results.

The most effective and fastest acting local anaesthetics available are used. When injections (needles) for freezing are required only the smallest gauge needles are used resulting in minimal discomfort. Topical gels and sprays are also available when deemed useful.

We welcome parents in the treatment room, especially when they help us in our care.
